Starbucks Coffee Company

Store Manager

January 2019 • Danbury, CT

What I liked

They pay my tuition at ASU and have great benefits.

What I wish was different

I would prefer to work in a different location.

Advice

It has been a positive experience for the most part and comforting to know that they will cover my tuition (for ASU online) and I can still afford rent and bills.

What I liked

They let you wear clothes that are within a color scheme so there’s no set uniform and more freedom to dress the way you want to.

What I wish was different

It gets pretty busy and overwhelming working at Starbucks and customers can be grouchy in the morning especially if they have to wait in a long line. We tend to get blamed for it even though it’s out of our control. Also we were definitely understaffed once more people left to go back to school or reduced their hours.

Advice

Starbucks is very fast paced and requires quick learning individuals that are highly motivated. It’s easy to be overwhelmed so I would focus on keeping a calm head and taking things one step at a time. Also take advantage of your resources and ask coworkers if you’re ever confused about something!

What I liked

I enjoyed seeing the regular customers and connecting with them. I got to hear stories of how their summers were going, what they were doing that day, and what plans they had for the future. I also enjoyed working with all my coworkers and building relationships with them.

What I wish was different

I do not think I want anything different from Starbucks. We always care about the Starbucks experience our customers have, but I also think working there has made my Starbucks experience too.

Advice

Try new things!

What I liked

I like being able to work with drinks and learning about coffecxe

What I wish was different

Not having to deal with ever-changing laws on food safety due to the pandemic, but I'm sure that will stabilize once the pandemic is more under control.

Advice

That even if it is stressful dealing with changes and working through a pandemic that it will become easier to adapt to the changes.

What I liked

One of my favorite parts about my job would have to be the people. I love the people I work with, and the customers. I have an outgoing personality, and it is one of my favorite parts about my day to get to talk to people and hear about their day. I also enjoy being challenged through learning how to multitask. It has been a humbling job working at Starbucks because it has taught be to be loving, even if I do not feel loved.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different would be to have a more organized system when working the drive thru. The person on drive thru is responsible for taking orders on the headset, running to grab and make food, greeting customers at the window, making payment transactions, and recording our time. I enjoy being challenged and doing all of the tasks, however; it would be more expedient to have another DTO.

Advice

I would love to share with those who do not have experience in fast food, that Starbucks is doing everything possible to make the customer have a good experience. A lot of people do not know and understand all the barista or DTO has to do. I would advice people to be patient, believe the best, and always be kind. It makes such a difference at work if a customer asks how we are doing. Work can be hard, but people can make it so much easier, or in turn, make it harder.

What I liked

I personally loved being able to create connections with the customers, especially the regulars, and being able to make a positive impact on someones day with something as simple as a drink.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to bring the experiences with me, without having to leave behind so many faces I grew to know.

Advice

I would share with everyone to just be kind. You never know what others are going through and something as simple as a smile or a "Have a good day!" could change their whole mood.

What I liked

I liked that the job was fast pace and easy to learn. I also really enjoy the benefits of getting insurance and security that wherever I end up after undergrad, I would have a job at Starbucks.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had also taken a few summer classes so that I could have a lighter load this past semester. I decided to only work because I thought I would be too busy, but I should have knocked out my last science class.

Advice

I would advise anyone that wants to have a part time job and take classes to believe in themselves. It’s difficult but it is doable if you make time for it and work around your school schedule.

Shift supervisor

February 2018 • Renton, WA

What I liked

I love working for a company that supports me as a student. The hours are flexible and the benefits, even for shift workers are unbeatable. Starbucks calls all of its employees “partners” because they get stock grants from the very beginning. While this job isn’t for everyone, it has enhanced my personal learning experience and I’ve been able to work, go to school, and learn management skills at the same time!

What I wish was different

This job can be a bit stressful, but if you enjoy meeting people and coffee, it might be for you.
