What I liked

I loved learning how to make all the drinks and seeing regulars every morning. It felt good to know people’s orders and smile and just have a genuine conversation with them.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the schedules would be a little bit disorganized which would throw me off but it wasn’t too bad over the summer.

Advice

Be kind and just relax. You will be able to focus and do your job well if your mind isn’t frantic. If you communicate with your customers kindly, they will almost always understand.

Starbucks Shift Supervisor

May 2017 • New Port Richey, FL

What I liked

I love Starbucks and I plan to stay with this company for a long time. One of starbucks' biggest values is creating what is called a "third place." I relaxing and welcoming environment outside of home and work, but at a local coffee shop. My promotion to a shift lead this past summer has taught me a lot as an employee of starbucks and also as a person. I learned many new responsibilities and acquired the skills of being a leader while remaining a positive and smiling face.

What I wish was different

I care a lot about my job and my reputation around me, but I have come to realize that many employees come to work only for the money. To me it is more than that, and I wish other baristas/starbucks partners were also like this. I dedicate myself when I am on the floor and I make sure I continue to connect with my costumers and please them, while some employees show up late, slack, and never connect with costumers. I wish to inspire others with my motivation and work ethic.

Advice

One piece of advice I will share about having a part time job or a full time job if you are a college student is to find a job with a company that is supportive of your life outside and inside of work. Starbucks is an incredible company with great benefits, flexible hours, and supports your academic goals. Arizona State University provides an incredible opportunity through Starbucks and provides Starbucks Baristas with the opportunity of free tuition through ASU.

What I liked

My team is fun, supportive, and hardworking, and Starbucks is currently making it possible for me to finish my degree.

What I wish was different

I wasn’t good at managing my time this summer. I wish I had been more proactive at taking charge of my schedule.

Advice

If you’re going to do school and work, be prepared to sacrifice time elsewhere. For me, I lost a lot of social time to school.

Barista

July 2017 • Antioch, IL

What I liked

I liked interacting with costumers and creating drinks to the csotumers liking.

What I wish was different

Wish I had experience at a full Starbucks rather than inside a grocery store (Jewel-osco) because the rules and/or benefits are with the associated store. The benefits are not comparable to a free-stand alone location.

Advice

If you are applying to be a barista for the first time, do not be nervous about learning the techniques of making all the drinks on the menu because on average will only take 2 weeks to learn the menu. After the hard work of training, being a barista is great!

Shift Supervisor

August 2017 • Orem, UT

What I liked

Starbucks takes good care of their people! You get free food and drinks during your shift, stock grants, and full benefits (even for part time employees)! I’ve also had great experiences with their store managers. Starbucks places a lot of importance on creating environments and relationships that support individual wellness.

What I wish was different

Communication between corporate offices and baristas in their stores can get pretty bumpy. Baristas are often left scrambling to meet goals or prepare for events they weren’t properly informed of.

Advice

This job moves fast and stays consistently busy. There isn’t much down time, and there’s rarely a shift I walk away from feeling like I’ve met all the expectations the company places on me.
