Transportation Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Parkersburg, WV

What I liked

I enjoyed getting immediately immersed in the fields of transportation and construction. The experience revolved around learning on the job, but there was plenty of support along the way from coworkers involved in the same projects. The projects that took place during the internship were centered around bridge design and rehabilitation, and getting hands on experience in these areas was great. The large amount of fieldwork gave me a good base to go off of in future work experiences, and the diversity of projects gave me a wide variety of knowledge.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more involvement with design software. There was a heavy amount of field experience, but not much opportunity to get involved with any design work within the frame of the internship.

Advice

My piece of advice for this experience is to be ready for anything. Working at an ever-expanding firm like B&N means that there are lots of different projects going on at one time. This means that you might be working on something you're unfamiliar with. Treat it as a chance to learn something new and go into it with a good attitude!
