Adult Education Support Intern

***This internship is reserved for students eligible for the summer internship stipend. Students eligible will have been notified via email from Student Engagement & Career Development.***

Intern will work directly with the Literacy Connects' ABL (Adult Basic Literacy) and ELAA (English Language Acquisition for Adults) programs. Intern will divide time working with the ELAA Teacher Training Coordinator, and the Student Support Coordinator. The Teacher Training Coordinator is responsible for new teacher training, as well as ongoing professional development and curriculum support for current teachers. The Student Support Coordinator connects our adult learners with community resources and services (for example, low-cost wifi and devices) to support their success in class. Both functions – preparing volunteers to teach and preparing students to persist in attending – are vital components of Literacy Connects’ programming.
This summer internship role will support ELAA through hands-on teacher support projects such as creating materials (for example, sets of presentation slides) to go with our curriculum, and will support both adult programs by helping to connect students with the resources they need to succeed when fall classes begin, as well as assisting students in our computer basics class.

Potential tasks:
Collaborate with Teacher Training Coordinator to prepare for fall classes:
  • Create presentation slides to support the use of the in-person lesson plans in our Zoom classes.
  • Organize our catalog of materials to match up with our curriculum units (for example, linking together the Shopping & Money unit with relevant texts, images, and websites in our library of classroom resources).
Collaborate with Student Support Coordinator to distribute community resource and services information:
  • Follow-up with individual adult students to confirm referrals to services were successful
  • Research new resources/services to learn about requirements and application processes
Provide support in the Computer Basics class (taught in Spanish):
  • Attend the weekly class and work one-to-one with students to provide English language support for non-Spanish speaking students.
  • This is not an interpretation role, but comprehension of conversational Spanish is necessary.
Assist with some student registration and data entry as needed.

Qualifications:
●      Ability to do the majority of hours in-person at the office, some tasks possible to complete remotely
●      Enjoys hands-on projects and can work independently to manage time
●      Ability to navigate Zoom, Google Office Suite
●     Attention to detail
●     Flexible, positive attitude and willing to help where needed
●     Bilingual (Spanish/English) – formal Spanish unnecessary, but conversational comprehension required
