Job Shadow in Civil Engineering & Land Development (Seattle Metro Area, WA)

Core Design, Inc. is a privately owned team of professionals and technicians that specialize in Planning, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, Civil Engineering and Surveying services for commercial, residential and public land development projects. Core Design is deeply rooted, built to last and committed to the success of our clients. 

The host for this opportunity is Michael Moody, Associate and Director of Engineering!

Core Design takes an immersion approach to job shadow opportunities so all job shadows include hands on project work, site visits, engineering calculations and formal training. Our industry is private land development in the pacific northwest so we must be experts in grading, road design, utility design and storm water management, all in support of developing and reshaping land to realize the vision for our clients. 
    
   A sample agenda is as follows: 
    
   9a Staff Introductions, Office Tour, Presentation: Land Development and the Civil Engineer 
   10a Civil Design & Tools, Roads 
   11a Hydrologic Analysis & Calculations 
   12p Lunch 
   1p Site Visit, Downstream Analysis 
   2p Conveyance & Backwater Calculations 
   3p Presentation: Path to PE (career pathing for the civil engineer in Washington) 
   4p Q&A with staff (round table convo with staff) 
    
    
   We have half day shadows (4 hrs) and full day shadows (8 hours) available. 
    
   Job Shadows will learn how civil engineering applies to land development in Washington State as well as see how we use current tools in the industry. They will also have opportunities to run hydrologic models, visit construction sites and make backwater calculations (open channel flow). Finally, job shadows will hear a presentation on career pathing for PEs in Washington and conclude with a round table conversation with 2 to 4 staff members taken from our team of PEs, EITs, designers and technicians. 

This opportunity will prioritize civil engineering students or engineers with civil interest. Lunch will be provided. This shadow will be offered the following days:
  • Monday, March 9th
  • Tuesday, March 10th
  • Wednesday, March 11th
  • Thursday, March 12th
  • Friday, March 13th

This career exploration/professional development opportunity is part of the University of Arizona Job Shadow Program (JSP).
