Mechanical Engineer Intern (Tucson, AZ - Summer 2020)

Forget “special projects” for newbies, our mechanical engineering interns work side-by-side with a mentor, making hands-on contributions to the world’s top-selling GPS navigation and wireless communication products. Our interns not only direct and coordinate mechanical development, but they develop concepts and design mechanical and electromechanical products/systems. They also design electronic packages using Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems, use learned skills to take a product from concept to mass production, design product components, conduct testing/analysis and so much more. We are looking for a full time Mechanical Engineer Intern to design and develop basic mechanical designs and utilize CAD software to model basic parts in a team oriented environment at our Tucson, Arizona office. In this role, you’ll also be responsible for applying your knowledge of math, science and physics, strong spatial skills, and a pragmatic approach to partner with experienced engineers in taking product concepts to mass production. Other essential functions in this role include:
  • Model basic parts and components including injection molded plastic, die cast aluminum and zinc, sheet metal, CNC machined and screw machine fabricated parts, compression molded rubber, extrusions, display components, flex circuits, touch panels, speaker enclosures, mounting systems, etc.
  • Specify requirements for and source parts such as electrical connectors, speakers, microphones, LCD’s, backlights, keypads, switches, electric motors, screw machined parts, rotary controls, batteries and antennas
  • Develop and design test plans for basic mechanical systems and conduct testing of products to verify compliance with design requirements
  • Interface with Electrical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and toolmakers for discussion of basic designs.
  • Maintain configuration control of documentation for products in production and interface with available drafting and document control resources
  • Applies design standards and procedures to implement basic designs



Qualifications

 
Qualified candidates for this role will have completed coursework towards a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a field relevant to perform the essential functions of this job description with a minimum cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0. Other requirements include:
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
A cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 and previous experience with CAD and relevant mechanical design is highly preferred!
