BACKGROUND:
The Commissioned Officer Student Training & Externship Program (SRCOSTEP) are commissioned officers of the United Public Health Service (USPHS), "in training" while completing their last year of school in preparation to transition to work for The U.S. Department of Justice - Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). The program was designed to attract qualified health professionals looking for a challenging career while serving the under-served populations. The BOP’s SRCOSTEP falls under the Health Services Division, Staffing & Recruitment Office located in Washington, DC. We recruit students from accredited colleges and universities across the United States and invite them to apply. Our participants are afforded opportunities such as:

+ Inpatient/Outpatient Settings                            + Crisis Intervention/Emergent

+ Exceptional Clinical Supervision                        + Team Medicine Approach

+ Scope & Skill Building                                        + Treat Diverse Medical Conditions

+ Professional Development                                 + Mentorship/Sponsorship

+ Treatment Progression Longevity                      +Upward Mobility

While in training (last year of school), duties include learning, growing, and completing school while getting paid at the Officer-1 (0-1) rank (2018 Military Pay Scale), to include Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), and FREE medical for themselves and their dependents through Tricare. When they graduate, they become Regular Active Duty Uniformed Service Members in the USPHS, and their guaranteed job will begin in one of the BOPs 122 institutions across the U.S. to work clinical roles in the degree (RN, NP, PA, RX, MLS, PT/OT), in which they earned. Payback entails working twice in months the months the BOP paid them. For example if an NP was paid for 10 months while in last year of school, the payback time to the BOP is 20 months. In our program we ensure our students receive above average mentoring and clinical supervision while working form a team medicine perspective. SRCOSTEPs are a highly value-added to the BOP, the USPSH, and the nation. All of our 6500+ PHS officers are detailed to federal agencies, but when there is a natural disaster that we are called upon to serve, we are "deployed" in support of the emergency to fulfill our role as "America's First Responders".
