300 Hour Position
Approximately 10-15 hours/week

I.   ORGANIZATIONAL PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND
The Primavera Foundation provides pathways out of poverty through safe, affordable housing, workforce development and neighborhood revitalization. Primavera promotes economic and social justice while working to build a future in which all people are assured basic human rights, a livable income, and safe, affordable housing.
The vision for the Las Abuelitas Afterschool Program is to provide a safe, structured, and educational environment where children can elect to spend their time after school hours. The program is offered at no cost to Las Abuelitas and neighborhood residents to ensure that all families, regardless of socio-economic status, have access to childcare and academic support for their children. Daily homework help and tutoring are provided, along with a supervised safe space in which games, art supplies, athletic equipment, books, gardening activities, healthy foods, and technology are made available and promoted. The program aims to promote literacy skills as well as raise academic achievement through tutoring/homework help and through a special focus on reading. The AmeriCorps State member will be a tutor working one-on-one or in small groups as well as assist with and create activities that aim to increase literacy.
 
II.    PROJECT FOCUS AREAS AND ACTIVITIES
A. The AmeriCorps State member will provide tutoring, homework help and reading assistance to children enrolled in the program to help improve literacy. Tutoring will be done one-on-one or with groups of two or three.
B. The AmeriCorps member will work with the Afterschool Program Coordinator to come up with strategies and a plan for improving literacy skills. They will also gather input from the children enrolled in the program about how, where and to whom they like to read.
 
III. Requirements and Benefits
A. Education, Skills and Abilities
 
Minimum qualifications:
o Age 17 or older
o Must have experience working or volunteering with children
o Experience tutoring is highly desirable, but not required
o Creative individual who is patient and encouraging with others
o Ability to work as a part of a team
o Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Apps
o Strong written and verbal communication skills
o Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting in a consistent, energetic, and positive manner
o Effective problem-solving skills
o Ability to understand the "big picture" while completing detail oriented tasks
o Friendly and effective interpersonal skills, especially with youth
o Must have Level 1 fingerprint clearance card or the ability to obtain one
o Consistent and reliable access to transportation not required, location easily accessible
   via bus, bicycle, or walking
 
AmeriCorps State Member Benefits (300 Hour – Ed Award Only)
●  Upon completion of service, minimum-time (300 hour) AmeriCorps members receive a $1230.69 education award that can be applied to educational costs or student loans
●  Members participate in 10 (2-hour) trainings that qualify them for a Certificate in Civic Leadership and 4 college credits from Prescott College
●  Team support and coaching
