300 Hour Position

Approximately 8-10 hours/week

I.      ORGANIZATIONAL PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND

Fred G. Acosta Job Corps Center supports the Job Corps program's mission of teaching eligible young people the skills they need to become employable and independent and placing them in meaningful jobs or further education. Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. Job Corps programs and services address education, both GED and high school diploma, employable skills, interpersonal and workplace soft skills, basic medical, behavioral and dental services are also included, a full range of counseling to meet the variety needs of unskilled low-income population youth as well as homeless youth. 

The Fred G. Job Corps Center is seeking AmeriCorps State members to provide tutoring services and conduct enrichment sessions to improve student’s skills in academic subjects as well as skills in critical thinking and problem-solving. The goal of this project will be to reach and engage youth and community members to gain academic training and skills and to monitor and improve project effectiveness and impact.

 

II.        PROJECT FOCUS AREAS AND ACTIVITIES

A.  Tutoring Services: The AmeriCorps State members will provide tutoring services in literacy and math to approximately 20 students, divided between the morning and afternoon.

B.  Enrichment Sessions: The AmeriCorps members will also conduct enrichment sessions in the afterschool sessions, using games and contests to practice problem solving and critical thinking. They will also prepare students for games and contests with Phoenix Job Corps with academic content in the general framework.

C.  Student Progress Evaluations: The AmeriCorps members will use existing data to compare student progress on a monthly basis.

 

III.  Requirements and Benefits

A.  Education, Skills and Abilities

Minimum qualifications:

o  Age 17 or older

o  Background which demonstrates a high level of academic experience or in youth

      education is highly preferred

o  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from other cultural backgrounds

o  Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Apps

o  Strong written and verbal communication skills

o  Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting in a consistent, energetic, and positive manner

o  Effective problem-solving skills

o  Ability to understand the "big picture" while completing detail oriented tasks

o  Friendly and effective interpersonal skills

o  Healthy sense of humor

o  Consistent and reliable access to transportation suggested, not required

o  Fluent in Spanish and English preferred

 

AmeriCorps State Member Benefits (300 Hour – Ed Award Only)

●    Upon completion of service, minimum-time (300 hour) AmeriCorps members receive a $1230.69 education award that can be applied to educational costs or student loans

●    Members participate in 10 (2-hour) trainings that qualify them for a Certificate in Civic Leadership and 4 college credits from Prescott College

●    Team support and coaching
