I. ORGANIZATIONAL PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND
United States Veterans Initiative (U.S. VETS) is the largest non-profit service provider for homeless veterans in the United States. U.S. VETS provides housing for approximately 2,000 homeless veterans in the Veterans in Progress (VIP) transitional programs across the country. U.S. VETS in Prescott operates a Permanent Housing (PH) program that serves chronically homeless veterans who have co-occurring disabilities.
The program is geared toward assisting homeless veterans in alleviating identified barriers in order to gain permanent housing, secure stable income and become productive and contributing members of the community. In addition, U.S. VETS supports homeless veterans by directly offering and partnering with community agencies to provide, numerous supportive services, including employment assistance, sobriety, life skills and other support groups, educational classes, intensive case management, legal assistance, disability claims filing and follow-up, and transportation. To help veterans realize their fullest potential and to minimize possibility of relapse, U.S. VETS creates leisure activities with the purpose of creating a more balanced environment within which to live and grow mentally, emotionally and physically.
The purpose of this project is to expand the coordinated entry system and reduce homelessness in Yavapai County. Coordinated Entry is a best practice tool for addressing poverty and homelessness, allowing for a streamlined referral process and placement into housing based on level of vulnerability and need. As the Coordinated Entry Screening Specialist, the AmeriCorps State member will screen and access individuals experiencing homelessness and coordinate with local service providers to facilitate services and referrals.
II. PROJECT FOCUS AREAS AND ACTIVITIES
A. Data Collection and Assessment: The AmeriCorps member will screen and assess individuals experiencing homelessness in Yavapai County, increasing the number of individuals screened in the Coordinated Entry System. They will also enter the collected information into the database Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).
B. Service Coordination and Referrals: The AmeriCorps member will provide appropriate service referrals for housing services. They will also coordinate with local service providers to help facilitate efficient provision of services for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Minimum qualifications:
o Age 17 or older
o Experience with web-based data entry
o Able to work with a diverse population, many of whom are often distressed or distraught
o Compassionate and friendly and effective interpersonal skills
o Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
o Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Apps
o Self-disciplined, consistent, dependable and timely
o Strong written and verbal communication skills
o Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting in a consistent, energetic, and positive manner
o Effective problem-solving skills
o Ability to understand the "big picture" while completing detail-oriented tasks
o Healthy sense of humor
o Consistent and reliable access to reliable transportation
AmeriCorps State Member Benefits (1700 Hour)
● $12,630 living allowance during term of service
● Upon completion of service, full-time (1700 hour) AmeriCorps members receive a $5,920 education award that can be applied to educational costs or student loans
● Members participate in 10 (2-hour) trainings that qualify them for a Certificate in Civic Leadership and 4 college credits from Prescott College
