Job Shadow in Communications, PR, & Government in Phoenix

The City of Phoenix Public Works Public Information Officer Job Shadow will spend 8 hours shadowing a Public Information Officer at the city of Phoenix to include attending key meetings, a tour of one of our transfer stations and a presentation by our zero waste team. Meet and network with key leaders at the City of Phoenix who are part of a team of more than 10,000 people that work hard to help keep Phoenix running.  Your Job Shadow Host is a fellow Wildcat who graduated from UA with a Bachelor's in Communication in 2005.

Draft agenda subject to change:
8 a.m. - sit in on key meetings
9 a.m. - take tour of our Phoenix North Gateway Transfer Station and see how eye-opening the process of trash and recycling can be. It will change how you think about reusing, reducing and repurposing your waste!
12 - 1 p.m. Lunch
1 p.m. - 2 p.m. sit in on a key meeting, meet executive team members
2 p.m. - 3 p.m. create a media advisory draft
3 p.m. - 4 p.m. create social media posts for our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter accounts
4 p.m. - 5 p.m. questions, debriefing, experience summary.

This Job Shadow Opportunity is only available on March 5th.

Students interested in communication, marketing, public relations, journalism, graphic design, advertising, political science, public administration, and business management majors would most benefit from this job shadow opportunity. However, all majors are welcome to apply. The student that would benefit most from this job shadow opportunity is a student who wants to learn about how a public information officer in the public sector works to inform our residents of key services and information. A student who wants to learn about creating press releases, media interview talking points, marketing and communications material to tell the City of Phoenix story would benefit most.

This is part of the UA Job Shadow Program (JSP). The JSP is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to a career field and be mentored by actual professionals. Unless otherwise noted, the experience is one day long and will take place sometime during Spring Break, March 5-9.
